Emi Ikkanda is the Senior Editor at Seal Press, an imprint at Basic Books / Hachette. She previously worked at Spiegel & Grau / Penguin Random House and at Henry Holt & Company / Macmillan. She acquires books on current and global affairs, social justice, race, feminism, history, space, tech, and science; including memoirs that humanize larger social or global issues. 

Recent standout titles on her list include Ellen Pao’s memoir of her Silicon Valley gender discrimination case, Reset, which is soon to be a Shonda Rhimes Netflix show; Carla Power’s yearlong journey through the Quran, If the Oceans Were Ink, which became a Pulitzer and National Book Award finalist; and Julia Angwin’s New York Times bestseller about online surveillance, Dragnet Nation.

Emi has worked with many industry organizations on diversity initiatives, including the Association of American Publishers, People of Color in Publishing, Representation Matters, and the Women’s Media Group. She also regularly speaks on diversity panels, most recently at the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) Conference and the Brooklyn Book Festival.

Before joining the book world, Emi studied abroad at the American University of Paris, graduated from the University of California Berkeley, and earned her master’s at King’s College London, University of London.
